Value of Open Source – What is it like to be a programmer in Kampala? (Part 8)
Value of Open Source?
The programmers mentioned that 90% of the code running on their systems is open source. They all use open source and they all love it. They don’t need to pay a lot to get it and explain that it makes a big difference for them. The programmers learn a lot from having access to the code and most of what they do on mobile is built on open source. One programmer explained that he would have been a programmer either way, but that with open source code he could learn far faster than otherwise.
Not everything is on mobile but at least 60% of their work is dedicated to mobile. 30% is for desktop applications and 10% for PDA’s, telecommunication companies and hardware, the car industry, etc… This is a topic I will be exploring in more depth later.
